Flexion distraction is a chiropractic therapy applied to the lumbar spine that is non-surgical, increasing limited range of motion in the lumbar spine. This holistic alternative technique is safe and non-forceful, making it ideal for all, including those with conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Treatment helps to relieve symptoms and/or correct disc bulges, herniated discs and radiating pain associated with mechanical failure of the spine.
How is it performed?
A special chiropractic table distracts and flexes the spine slowly and laterally. By allowing the spine to restore its own proper motion, unilateral pressure is lifted from the disc. This negative pressure acts on the protruded disc allowing it to return to its normal anatomical position. The flexion distraction motion also maintains healthy discs through imbibition – allowing nutrients into the spinal disc and keeping them well articulated.
Flexion distraction chiropractic therapy may help many diagnoses such as:
- Lumbar disc injuries – ruptured, bulging, herniated, slipped discs
- Lower back pain
- Leg pain from sciatica, arthritis or other causes
- Lower back stiffness – spondylolisthesis, sprains, strains
- Scoliosis
- Sacroiliac syndrome
- Spinal stenosis – narrowing of the spinal canal
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Failed back surgical syndrome
