Dr. Bradley Basaraba, DC
A 20-year career in chiropractic all started with the ‘help’ of a car accident in the spring of 1986.
Dr. Basaraba broke his back in the middle of the Arizona desert and was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital. A CT scan determined a burst fracture of the two lumbar vertebrae and other ancillary bones.
Walking was impossible, let alone sitting up in a bed. Three surgeries followed with a spinal fusion, two bone grafts, and Harrington Rods were installed and removed. Drastic weight loss, learn how to walk again – twice, and wearing a body brace for nine months were additional challenges to be met.
Breaking his back derailed his athletic career at its pinnacle. A track and football career at the University of Alabama was put on a definite hold. A Canadian national recorder holder and hurdle champion couldn’t even step off a curb. And his worst injury before this was a sprained ankle.
During rehab at a local gym between his second and third surgeries, Basaraba was trying to gain back some weight and muscle mass. He met a football player who introduced him to his chiropractor.
Fifty weeks after fracturing his spine and three surgeries, he started to run again.
Two years later with lots of chiropractic care he was at Canadian National Hurdle Camp. Basaraba came up short trying to make the 1988 Olympic Team in 400 Metre Hurdles. But his athletic skill was still at a high level and he was recruited to try out for the Canadian Bobsleigh Team. Again chiropractic reached out, as the team doctor was a chiropractor, the first for the Canadian National Team and in any sport including the Olympics.Unfortunately, the sport was too dangerous as accidents are part of training and racing. Basaraba could not afford any further life-threatening injuries. At 25 years old, he left the team but found his calling to be a chiropractor.
